31 May 1968: ABC screens a live telecast of the Indianapolis 500. Utilising the Intelsat II satellite, it is the first time the major car racing event is being shown live on Australian television.

31 May 1993: The Nine Network debuts Gold Coast-based drama series Paradise BeachParadise Beach: Where sand gets in the soap [2018]

31 May 1995:  The Nine Network presents coverage of Game Two of the Rugby League State Of Origin — Queensland versus NSW — from the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

31 May 1996: The inaugural Legends Of Football match — Victoria versus The Rest Of Australia — is on Nine from Whitten Oval, Melbourne. The match, a fund raiser for research into prostate cancer, is launched in tribute to former VFL great, the late EJ “Ted” Whitten, who died from the disease in 1995.

31 May 2002: The Opening Ceremony of the FIFA World Cup is live on SBS. Coverage of the competition is shared between SBS and the Nine Network.

31 May 2007: ABC premieres 3-part documentary series Air Australia, looking at the creation of the Australian aviation industry. Narrated by Colin Friels.
