Former Neighbours star Troy Beckwith has died at age 48.

News of his death was posted to social media by former castmate Kym Valentine: “It pains me so much to have to say this. Our dear old friend Troy Beckwith has passed away. Another member of our tv family gone way too soon. There will be no funeral as per Troy’s request. Thanks for all the memories my cheeky mate and all my love to your friends and family.”

Beckwith’s family has put out a statement to address speculation about the cause of his death: “The family would like everyone to know that Troy fought a tough battle with cancer. Some news sources are suggesting otherwise, which is totally untrue.”

As a teenager, Beckwith starred in children’s dramas The Miraculous Mellops and Pugwall. He also made a guest appearance in an early episode of adult drama Chances and later appeared in Snowy, Halifax fp and Good Guys Bad Guys.

He had a short stint in Neighbours in 1991, playing the part of Darren Wood. He returned to the series the following year in the ongoing role of Michael Martin. He left the series in 1998.

His last credited roles were in State Coroner, Blue Heelers and a short film, Caffeine.

In mid-2017, Beckwith went missing for about two weeks, sparking concerns for his health as he had an undisclosed medical condition.
