Seven Network personality Larry Emdur has won the Gold Logie at the 64th annual TV Week Logie Awards, held on Sunday night at The Star, Sydney.
The co-host of The Morning Show and host of The Chase Australia took the top award ahead of fellow nominees Andy Lee, Julia Morris, Asher Keddie, Robert Irwin, Tony Armstrong and last year’s Gold Logie winner, Sonia Kruger.
Emdur also won the Bert Newton Award For Most Popular Presenter. For Emdur, despite almost 40 years in the business, they were his first ever Logie nominations and wins.
He had to admit that last week he was so sure he would not win the Gold that he made a promise that if he did win he would have a tattoo of his fellow nominees’ names tattooed onto his backside.
True to his word, on The Morning Show the day after his win, he was on set having a picture of a Logie statuette and the initials of his nominees tattooed as promised!

It was the Seven Network’s second hosting of the awards since taking over the rights from Nine, with Sam Pang again as host. Though being on Seven didn’t stop Pang delivering some cutting remarks in his opening monologue at the network’s expense, particularly around some recent high-profile legal cases. He didn’t hold back either against his other employer, Ten, where he is a panellist on Have You Been Paying Attention?
Presenters during the night included Robert Irwin, Julia Morris, Larry Emdur, Hamish Blake, Dr Chris Brown, Carrie Bickmore, Kate Langbroek, Dave Lawson, Charlie Pickering, Ally Langdon, Andy Lee, Stephen Curry, Luke McGregor, Celia Pacquola, Rachel Griffiths, Deborah Mailman, Ada Nicodemou, James Stewart, Ray Meagher, Kate Ritchie, Costa Georgiadis, Steve Peacocke, Michelle Lim Davidson, Georgie Parker, Matt Shirvington, Sarah Abo, Natalie Barr, Felix Cameron, Lee Tiger Halley and four-time Gold Logie winner Lisa McCune to hand out the Gold.

The biggest winner of the night was the Netflix series Boy Swallows Universe, the Brisbane-based coming-of-age series based on the novel by Trent Dalton. The series collected five awards, including Best Mini-Series Or Telemovie and individual awards for 15-year old Felix Cameron (Graham Kennedy Award For Most Popular New Talent and Best Lead Actor In A Drama), Sophie Wilde (Best Supporting Actress) and Bryan Brown (Best Supporting Actor).
ABC scored well with wins for Utopia (including for cast members Rob Sitch and Kitty Flanagan), Total Control (Deborah Mailman for Best Lead Actress) and Bluey. The long-running series Australian Story won Best Current Affairs Program, but the other news and current affairs categories that ABC normally ranks well with were to go to the commercial networks.
The Nine Network’s 60 Minutes won Best News Coverage Or Public Affairs Report for its investigation into disgraced former soldier Ben Roberts-Smith. In accepting the award, Tom Steinfort acknowledged a certain irony that the story’s win is being broadcast on a network that previously employed Roberts-Smith in a management position. Nine also had a win with A Current Affair host Ally Langdon collecting the award for Best News Or Public Affairs Presenter. In her acceptance speech she acknowledged that while the show sometimes focuses on low-rent stories like chasing dodgy tradespeople, it does rise to the challenge to cover more substantial topics. She also paid tribute to her late father-in-law Mike Willesee, who founded the original A Current Affair in 1971.
The Seven Network documentary John Farnham: Finding the Voice won Best Factual Or Documentary Program, with the award accept by producer Paul Clarke and Gaynor Wheatley, the wife of Farnham’s manager, the late Glenn Wheatley.
Seven also had wins with the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 for Best Sports Coverage, The Voice for Best Entertainment Program and RFDS for Best Drama Program.
Network Ten saw MasterChef Australia win Best Competition Reality Program and Have You Been Paying Attention? winning Best Comedy Entertainment Program. Ten also shared Gogglebox Australia‘s win for Best Structured Reality Program with Foxtel.
The Nine Network’s Travel Guides won Best Lifestyle Program.
Red Symons opened the In Memoriam segment with a tribute to former Hey Hey It’s Saturday colleague John Blackman, with Missy Higgins performing the song The Sound Of White as tributes rolled to various television and showbusiness identities that had died this past year.

Claudia Karvan and Erik Thomson led the presentation to induct Rebecca Gibney into the TV Week Logie Awards Hall of Fame, accompanied by a passionate speech from Gibney’s son Zach Bell. Gibney, a New Zealander who came to Australia in the 1980s, has been a regular and well-loved fixture in many television dramas, comedies and mini-series ever since. In the presentation, she acknowledged that her first job offer was a choice between Neighbours and children’s drama Zoo Family. She chose Zoo Family, produced by Crawford Productions, which put her in good stead for a role with the company’s popular prime time drama The Flying Doctors. Other credits include leading roles in Come In Spinner, the Halifax fp and Small Claims telemovies, All Together Now, Snowy, Kangaroo Palace, The Silver Brumby, The Day Of The Roses, Winter, Wanted, the long-running Packed To The Rafters and its spin-off Back To The Rafters.
Leading the musical acts was a John Farnham tribute performed by Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy, followed later in the evening by British singer-songwriter James Bay.
Despite the awards getting a revamp this year, with a number of categories merging the “Most Popular” (publicly voted) and “Most Outstanding” (industry peer voted) awards into “Best” awards, the overall presentation including the Red Carpet arrivals still clocked in at just under five hours.
