Former Seven Network newsreader Sharyn Ghidella is returning to Network Ten to read Ten News First in Brisbane.

Her signing with Ten comes just weeks after she was suddenly made redundant from reading the main Seven News in Brisbane after 11 years in the role.

In a statement issued by Ten, Ghidella said:

“Returning to Ten News First feels like coming home. Network Ten provided me my first opportunity to work in a metropolitan newsroom and I have nothing but fond memories of my time there in the early 90s. To be returning to present a new local news service, with even more content relevant to Queenslanders, represents an exciting opportunity for me.

“Viewers recently have been very vocal about what they want in a news service, and Ten News First is tailoring its new local bulletin to meet those viewer needs. Ten News First has long been committed to keeping its audience informed about the issues and events that matter to them, both at home and overseas, and I can’t wait to join this dedicated and highly professional team in the Queensland newsroom.”

Growing up in North Queensland, Ghidella’s TV career began at the local station, NQTV. She then worked at Ten in Brisbane from 1990 to 1992 as an on-the-road reporter and newsreader. She moved to Sydney when she joined the Nine Network in 1992, reading the network’s early morning news bulletin Daybreak before becoming a regular newsreader on Today.

In 2007 she returned to Brisbane to join Seven, initially presenting the weekend news.

She will be anchoring Ten News First from September, with the Brisbane bulletin returning to being presented from the studios at Mount Coot-tha. Since 2020, redundancies across the network led to the Brisbane news bulletin being anchored by Sandra Sully, based in Sydney.

Ghidella’s signing maintains Ten’s all-female line-up of 5.00pm newsreaders across the country — with Sandra Sully (Sydney), Jennifer Keyte (Melbourne), Kate Freebairn (Adelaide) and Natalie Forrest (Perth).
