All four networks present coverage of the 1966 Federal Election. The Nine Network utilises its coaxial cable link between Sydney and Melbourne and microwave links from Sydney to Canberra for its coverage. Meanwhile, ABC provides a five-state “national” coverage, arranging to tap into a standby link on the Sydney-Melbourne coaxial cable and then relaying across its network of links to other states — except Western Australia, where due to the time difference ABC presents its own stand-alone coverage.
HSV7 and ATV0 provide Melbourne-based coverage with occasional landline crosses to the national tally room in Canberra.
From London By Satellite is a short ten-minute presentation, billed as the first live television connection between the United Kingdom and Australia — allowing a conversation between family members split between London and in Carnarvon, Western Australia. The program took place on the Friday afternoon, Western Australian time. Because no direct TV link existed between the east and west coasts of Australia — until 1970 — eastern states viewers only saw the telecast from videotape the next day.
