ABC launches its new Asia-Pacific television service, Australia Television International (ATVI) with a one-hour special, A Network Begins, hosted by Karina Kelly. ATVI was officially opened by Prime Minister Paul Keating.

Later, ABC begins nightly broadcast of Australia Television International News, presented from ABC’s Darwin studios.

ATVI initially broadcast via satellite to fifteen countries in South-East Asia.
