Wednesday 25 January 1989 — MELBOURNE

Network Ten debuts its new soap E Street with two-hour episodes over two nights. The series then settled into a regular one-hour timeslot at 7.30pm Wednesday and Thursday.

The Nine Network sought to put a dent in the new show’s ratings with a re-run of a perennial favourite, the movie The Sound Of Music.

E Street fought on to run for four years.
