The acclaimed documentary The Last Tasmanian is shown in Perth two years after airing in the eastern states and as a cinema release. It had also already been shown on the BBC in the United Kingdom. The film, three years in the making, presented a dramatised account of the genocide of 4000 Tasmanian aborigines and profiled the life of Truganini — believed to be the last full blood Tasmanian aboriginal — who died in 1876, aged in her mid-60s.
The Last Tasmanian won a TV Week Logie Award in 1979 for best single documentary.
