Monday 13 June 1988 — MELBOURNE

The premiere of Nine’s new late afternoon news and magazine program, Live At Five, with Terry Willesee and Jo Pearson. Network Ten responds with 20-year-old re-runs of the sitcom The Munsters, hoping to emulate the success that Nine previously had with a similar classic series, The Addams Family, in the 5.00pm timeslot.

Live At Five, an expensive gamble to expand news ahead of the traditional 6.00pm hour, failed to work. It was cut down to a half-hour show, Eye On Australia, before being axed completely in July 1989.

The Queen’s Birthday Holiday also sees ABC depart from its usual schools programming during the day, and SBS commences transmission earlier in the afternoon with music specials.
