Ten News has paid tribute and bid a fond farewell to journalist and news presenter Hugh Riminton, who finished at the network tonight.

His retirement ends a remarkable career of 48 years in journalism, and the last 17 years at Network Ten. He has reported from more than 40 countries over his career, covering some of the biggest stories from war zones to political hot spots to natural disasters.

His career began as a teenager in New Zealand in the late 1970s, coming to Australia in 1983 to join the Macquarie radio network.

He then became a reporter for the Nine Network in Melbourne, later to be posted to the Nine’s Europe bureau in London. On return to Australia he became presenter for the late-night bulletin, Nightline.

He then left Nine to go to CNN, where he hosted CNN Today for five years.

In 2009 he joined Ten where he has hosted Meet The Press, been National Affairs Editor and a news presenter for Ten News, Ten News + and The Project.

His farewell was led by an emotional speech by newsreader Sandra Sully: “He is without doubt, one of the finest journalists this country has ever produced. And we have the great pleasure and the privilege to call him our own. Our colleague, and our friend.”

After the tribute package that followed, Riminton paid tribute to Sully and to his colleagues: “You’ve been wonderful to work with. You’ve been a great a great source of pride. You’ve taught me so much. The future is in extremely good hands. More history is coming at us. Inevitably, it will. I won’t be there to report it for you, I have other plans in my retirement from daily news. But I know that the news business is in great hands with this team.”
