helenkapalos_0001Helen Kapalos has stepped down as host of the Melbourne-Sydney edition of Today Tonight.

The journalist, who stepped in to the host’s chair a year ago after being made redundant by Ten News in Melbourne, is moving onto a new reporting role with Seven‘s weekly current affairs program Sunday Night.

Her move from Today Tonight comes as Seven is rating second best in the east coast capitals against Nine in the 6.00pm news and current hours hour.

Nine’s recent expansion of its 6.00pm news to a one-hour format has seemed to strengthened its ratings. Seven has so far responded only by extending Seven News to 40 minutes, and cutting Today Tonight down to 20 minutes, in Sydney and Melbourne.

There are suggestions that Seven may follow Nine’s lead in the eastern states with a one-hour news bulletin, while in Seven’s stronger markets of Adelaide and Perth maintaining the half-hour Seven News followed by local editions of Today Tonight.

Nick Etchells will continue as temporary host of Today Tonight for Melbourne-Sydney for the next few weeks.

  1. Good riddance! To the show, that is! Today Tonight and A Current Affair are the two “sluts” of current affairs TV! Now if we can just get rid of that other one, TV will be much the richer for their removal.
