Christmas Day includes a direct telecast of Divine Service from St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney, made possible via a network of microwave links between Sydney and Melbourne. The link was also to be used for tennis and cricket telecasts between the two cities over the Christmas-New Year period as well as ABC’s New Year’s Eve program.
Other Christmas specials include The Queen’s Christmas Message, filmed by BBC at Buckingham Palace a week prior; a repeat of ABC’s production of Nutcracker Ballet from earlier in the year; GTV9’s Christmas pantomime Dick Whittington, featuring cast members of The Tarax Show; The Story Of Good Will, a Christmas pantomime from ABC’s Children’s TV Club; GTV9 newsreader Eric Pearce presenting a special program of poems for Christmas; and Glad Tidings, the story of the first Christmas presented by The Salvation Army.
