Nine Entertainment Co continues its downsizing of media assets with the sale of its Darwin station, NTD, to regional broadcaster WIN.

The sale comes soon after WIN was announced as the buyer for Nine’s NBN in Northern NSW. Both transactions are subject to Nine shareholder approval.

The transfer of NTD to WIN gives the regional broadcaster an entry into the Northern Territory — with Darwin representing a market size of approximately 140,000 — and WIN will be present in every state and territory.

Darwin viewers will continue to receive Nine Network programming on NTD via an affiliation agreement between WIN and Nine.

Nine’s connection to NTD dates back to the early 1990s. After selling his prized Nine Network stations to Alan Bond in 1987, Kerry Packer‘s Consolidated Press Holdings made a modest investment to take full ownership of NTD8.

In 1991, having re-gained control of Nine from Bond, he then transferred NTD8 to the Nine Network, eventually re-branding NTD to become Nine in 2003.
