Congratulations to Nine News Melbourne newsreader Peter Hitchener on his 10,000th news bulletin! An outstanding achievement in a volatile industry.

He started his career in Queensland in the 1960s before moving to Sydney in 1973, initially at ABC before switching over to TCN9.
In his early days at Nine, as well as working as a fill-in newsreader, he hosted a game show, Gambit, with Ros Wood.

He then moved further south, to GTV9 in Melbourne, in 1974, presenting National Nine News and a stint with the short-lived News Centre Nine link-up with Brian Henderson in Sydney. He went on to become deputy newsreader to Brian Naylor for twenty years, before being promoted to the role of chief newsreader following Naylor’s retirement in 1998.

In 2023 he transferred to the weekend news bulletin, making way for Alicia Loxley and Tom Steinfort.
