The Nine Network has axed its Darwin news service, Nine News Darwin, effective immediately.

ABC reports that 11 full-time staff are impacted, though many are to be redeployed to other roles, leaving three staff to be made redundant.

A single reporter and camera operator will remain to contribute Darwin-based news to Nine’s Brisbane-based news service, which will now be shown in Darwin seven nights a week.

The Darwin news service dates back to 1982 when the former NTD8 launched News At Seven. The bulletin later became Eight National News, then National Nine News when NTD8 became known as Nine in 2003.

In 2017, presentation of the Darwin bulletin moved to Brisbane. The Darwin bulletin was suspended in 2020 amid the COVID-19 outbreak, replaced with a relay of Nine‘s Brisbane news, with only brief local updates for Darwin.

Nine reinstated the one-hour Darwin news, still based in Brisbane, in October 2020.

The axing by Nine leaves ABC News as the only locally-produced television news service in Darwin.

Meanwhile, Nine has also made changes to its Gold Coast edition news, announcing that it will cut back from two newsreader positions to one, with the role shared by the two incumbents, Eva Milic and Paul Taylor.
