Scott Cam, host of The Block, has won the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality On Australian TV at the 56th annual TV Week Logie Awards, held Sunday night at Melbourne’s Crown Entertainment Centre.
Cam, who last year hosted both The Block: Sky High and The Block: All Stars, also collected the Logie for Most Popular Presenter. However Seven‘s My Kitchen Rules won the Logie for Most Popular Reality Program.
Last year’s Gold Logie winner Asher Keddie collected two Logies — Most Popular Actress and Most Outstanding Actress. Chris Lilley (Ja’mie: Private School Girl) was a surprise win for Most Popular Actor, while Lachy Hulme won Most Outstanding Actor for his portrayal of Frank Packer in Power Games: The Packer-Murdoch Story.
As with the last few years, there was no single host for the awards. Presenters to appear during the night included Dave Hughes, Amanda Kellar, Karl Stefanovic, Lisa Wilkinson, Samantha Armytage, Shane Jacobson, Jessica Marais, Lincoln Lewis, Patrick Brammall, Madeleine West, Mandy McElhinney, Anthony Hayes, Brenna Harding, Emma Alberici, Jennifer Hawkins, Luke Jacobz, Darren McMullan, Gyton Grantley, Noni Hazlehurst, Mel McLaughlin and Richard Wilkins — but Hamish And Andy and Craig McLachlan and Julia Morris were the highlights.
Eddie McGuire made a late appearance, fresh from dropping the c-word on Foxtel‘s Big Week In Footy earlier in the evening.
60 Minutes reporter Tara Brown paid tribute to the late Peter Harvey (pictured), inducted into the TV Week Logie Awards Hall Of Fame in recognition of his lengthy journalism career which included 38 years at Nine. Harvey’s Gold Logie was accepted by his son Adam and daughter Claire.
Longtime soap Home And Away won two awards — Most Popular Drama Series and Bonnie Sveen for Most Popular New Talent. Seven also collected Logies for Better Homes And Gardens (again!) and the 2013 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Redfern Now won the Logie for Most Outstanding Drama Series for the second year running, while UKTV drama Top Of The Lake won Most Outstanding Telemovie Or Mini-Series.
SBS collected two Logies — Remy Hii won the Graham Kennedy Award For Most Outstanding New Talent for his role in mini-series Better Man, and comedy series Housos won Most Outstanding Light Entertainment Program .
Peter Overton accepted Nine News‘ Most Outstanding News Coverage award for its coverage of the NSW Bushfires, and ABC’s Foreign Correspondent won Most Outstanding Public Affairs Report for its report on “Prisoner X”.
ABC3 series Nowhere Boys won Most Outstanding Children’s Series and Foxtel’s Kings Cross ER won Most Outstanding Factual Program.
Tina Arena performed the song Only Lonely as the Logies paid tribute to those that had passed away over the last year — including Wendy Hughes, Anthony Hawkins, Bill Peach, Alan Coleman, Johnny Lockwood, Penne Hackforth-Jones, Peter Benardos, Robert Moore, James Condon, Barbara Callcott, Joyce Jacobs, Maureen Duval and Charlotte Dawson.
Ten Eyewitness News presenter and former This Is Your Life host Mike Munro presented a This Is Your Life-type tribute to the Ten Network as it approaches its 50th anniversary later this year. For an industry that can be known to kick a rival when it’s down — and with Ten currently at a ratings low — it was an affectionate piece that recalled some of Ten’s key successes over its history.
There were music performances by Jason Derulo, MKTO, John Newman, Ed Sheeran and the world premiere of Kylie Minogue‘s new single I Was Gonna Cancel. Audio problems dogged much of the music performances, particularly Derulo’s opening sequence, and Minogue copped criticism amid suggestions she mimed her performance. It is something both Minogue — about to appear on screen as a judge on talent show The Voice — and her management have vehemently denied.
Apart from the awards being handed out the biggest prize is undoubtedly the ratings game — and the Logies paled in comparison to previous years. On a night where all networks had their big guns out as ratings returned after a two-week break, the TV Week Logie Awards was 8th highest rating program of the night with 962,000 viewers (OzTAM, 5 cities), while the Red Carpet arrivals averaged 974,000 viewers. Seven’s My Kitchen Rules, though not in direct competition with the Logies, topped the night with 1,912,000. The Australian episode of Modern Family gave Ten a rare glimmer of ratings hope with 1,092,000, while the lead-in preview Modern Family: An Australian Adventure scored 642,000 — a much higher than average result for Ten for the 6.00pm timeslot. The ABC1 telemovie Parer’s War was watched by 522,000.
In preliminary overnight figures, Seven won the night on 29.6%, followed by Nine (22.8%), Ten (10.5%), ABC1 (10.3%), 7mate and GO (both 3.9%), Gem (3.4%), SBS One (3.2%), ABC2 (3.0%), One (2.7%), 7TWO (2.6%), Eleven (1.7%), SBS2 (1.2%), ABC3 (0.7%), ABC News 24 (0.6%) and NITV (0.0%).

There were some that deserved their award and one or two who definitely didn’t!(Chris Lilley falls into the latter category) but the Logies should be for the free-to-air stations ONLY. They really ought to trim the wards down too! They’re becoming far too Americanised! Less is more, Logies organisers! Good to see Tina Arena showing her truly amazing singing talent there, though.
