Ten unveils Winter Olympics coverage

melmclaughlinstephenbradburyWith 100 days to go until the XXII Olympic Winter Games from Sochi, Russia, the Ten Network has announced details of what it promises is the biggest free-to-air coverage ever in Australia of a Winter Olympics.

The network is promising more than 550 hours of coverage across both channels Ten and One — including 360 hours of live coverage.

Ten will also offer eight channels of streamed coverage via its Ten Play online platform.

Ten’s nightly coverage will be headed by Sochi Tonight, hosted by Stephen Quartermain and Winter Olympic gold medalist Alisa Camplin OAM, screening at 6.00pm. Sochi Live, hosted by Mel McLaughlin (pictured) at Olympic Park in Sochi and Stephen Quartermain and Alisa Camplin in Melbourne, will provide live coverage throughout the evening. Brad McEwen takes over hosting Sochi Live overnight through to 5.30am.

One will broadcast Winter Olympics coverage 24 hours a day during competition. From 6.00pm to 6.00am Greg Rust and Nicole Livingstone will host live coverage of events, while during the daytime hours One will present competition highlights.

Ten’s news and current affairs portfolio, including Ten Eyewitness News, Wake Up and The Project will also incorporate Games coverage with their own reporters and presenters onsite at Sochi.

Commentators and presenters across the network’s coverage include Winter Olympic gold medalist Steven Bradbury OAM (pictured), three-time Olympian Steven Lee, former Olympians David Culbert and Steph Hickey, Snowboard expert Mitch Tomlinson, Freestyle Ski expert Luke Kneller, CEO of Ski and Snowboard Australia Michael Kennedy, Ten Sport journalists Lachie Reid and Rob Waters, Ten Sport presenter Mark Howard, Wake Up‘s Magdalena Roze, Nuala Hafner and Mazoe Ford and Ten Eyewitness News’ Danielle Isdale, Scott Mackinnon, Matt Doran, Melinda Nucifora and Max Futcher.

Network Ten CEO Hamish McLennan said:

“Sochi will play host to the most spectacular Olympic Winter Games the world has ever seen and Network Ten is delighted to bring all the action to Australians, for free.

“The XXII Olympic Winter Games will be one of the broadcasting events of 2014 and we will present it to Australians across several media platforms. The combination of Ten, One and Ten Play will ensure our coverage of this global sporting event is comprehensive, compelling and engaging.”

The XXII Winter Olympic Games from Sochi starts 7 February 2014 (8 February Australian time).

Thought that the regulatory anti siphoning rules prevented FTA from showing listed events on their secondary digital channels? Have ten scored an exemption for Sochi or has something changed?

    1. Hi Steve

The only thing I can think of is that from 2014 there will be no analogue TV so everyone will be watching digital and therefore will have access to the secondary channels.

Channel TEN will still broadcast the news in Perth. However, they will not show The Bold and the Beautiful due to the coverage.

Cheers. Not that I watch The Bold and The Beautiful at all. So Perth will be even further behind with it due to BBL and Hopman Cup. But my family and Mum’s friends watch it

Will The Bold And The Beautiful be aired in Melbourne, when Sochi 2014 is also airing? I hope it will still be on.

    1. My understanding is yes, that unless Ten makes any late changes The Bold And The Beautiful will continue in Melbourne during the Winter Olympics

The coverage is hopeless on Ch10

    Thanks god for digital

Roy and HG are yesterday’s people and are embarrassing with the false construction of story lines, and lead ins to stories and events.

Surely 10 could have done better, considering the event.

    They grate??????????

Just want to watch the events with intelligent, informed commentary.

Agree, ten coverage is pathetic. They don’t have a clue about big events. It’s frustrating when they cut from an event part way through then don’t return to it before it is finished. We have to find out the result at the presentation rather than seeing the finish live. Usually just for some nonsense news update that is just repeats of old news or for ten minutes of ads. And yes, Roy and HG are a waste of space, embarrassing, let’s hope no other nations get to see it.

Stephen Quartermain is hopeless hosting the Olympic coverage. His knowledge of sport beyond Australian Rules Football is very limited.

I used to love Roy & HG but the format is very tired, is was funny 14 years ago however.

Other than Quartermain, who is hopeless, I think 10 are doing a good job.
