Friday 20 July 1979 — MELBOURNE

The 1979 Miss Universe pageant is held at the Perth Entertainment Centre. It was the first time that the beauty contest had been held in Australasia.

The pageant was actually held from 9am in Perth (11am Australian Eastern Standard Time) to align with prime time in the United States.

The event later made headlines not because of its winner, Maritza Sayalero of Venezuela, but rather because the set collapsed at the close of the show. (It is not known if this part of the program made it to air on the delayed broadcast)

The telecast was produced by TVW7 in Perth and broadcast in Melbourne on GTV9.

GTV9 repeated the program the following Sunday afternoon.
