Another Hey Hey comeback?

heyheyDaryl Somers has publicly flagged the possibility of yet another Hey Hey It’s Saturday comeback… but you won’t see it on television.

Speaking on Brisbane radio station 612 ABC, Somers said he has long considered doing a Hey Hey It’s Saturday concert series or tour, citing the show’s enduring popularity on social media — although the program hasn’t appeared on TV since 2010.

Other shows that have enjoyed successful concert tours after their TV demise include Countdown and the original Spicks And Specks.

Somers currently has the original Hey Hey studio sets in storage — he acquired them as GTV Nine was moving out of its former premises in Bendigo Street, Richmond. Hey Hey was one of the last programs to be produced at the famous Studio 9.

He also picked up from the old building a number of old format videotape machines that are enabling the playback of any remaining tapes of the original Hey Hey It’s Saturday for digital archiving.

Hey Hey It’s Saturday began as a Saturday morning kids’ cartoon show in October 1971, initially screening only in Melbourne. Its move to prime time in February 1984 led it to become one of Nine’s most successful brands of the ’80s and ’90s, eventually coming to an end in November 1999.

The show made a popular return with two top-rating reunion specials in 2009 and a series of shows in 2010.

Somers is currently in Brisbane rehearsing for the upcoming stage production of Guys And Dolls.
